Program Details
While the kittens are enrolled in the Foster Deferment Program, you will be considered their temporary legal owner and responsible for their day-to-day care.
Once the kittens reach 8 weeks of age and weigh at least 2 pounds, they must be surrendered to YCAS to be spayed or neutered and placed for adoption through the shelter. Failure to surrender the kittens at that time will result in disqualification from the program and spay/neuter services will not be provided.
If any of the kittens require emergency or extensive medical care, you will be responsible for seeking veterinary treatment.
If you are also caring for the mother cat, YCAS may be able to provide spay services for her. However, we are not able to take the mother cat into our care for adoption at the end of the foster deferment period. Options for the mother cat may include:
Returning her to where she was found after she is spayed (she will receive an ear tip in this case)
Rehoming her independently
Scheduling a surrender appointment with YCAS (surrender fees may apply)
If you or someone you know would like to adopt one of the kittens, standard adoption fees will apply.
The Foster Deferment Program is limited to a set number of enrollments each month. If the program has reached capacity, we may not be able to enroll additional litters. To qualify, kittens must be under 8 weeks old and weigh less than 1.75 pounds at intake. Kittens outside this age or weight range are not eligible for the program.
If we are unable to enroll the kittens, our staff can help advise you on next steps and which shelter may serve the jurisdiction where the kittens were found.
