Adoptions
Dog adoptions are by appointment only from Monday-Thursday from 11am-3pm. Submit an inquiry form to schedule an appointment to meet any dog. Walk-in adoptions for dogs are Friday and Saturday 11am-3pm.
Cat and small animal adoptions are walk-ins Monday-Friday 11am-4pm and Saturday 11am-3pm
Steps to Adopt
1. View Adoptable Pets Online
Browse our list of available dogs, cats, and other pets.
Consider whether the pet fits your household, including size, temperament, and care needs (including age, grooming, known medical concerns)
Ensure your living situation allows pets; check with landlords or HOAs for guidelines.
2. Visit the Shelter & Meet the Pets
For Dogs:
If visiting Monday-Thursday, you must schedule an appointment by submitting an inquiry form; no appointment necessary on Fridays or Saturdays; all adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis.
Spend time getting to know the pet. Bring children and household members (including household dog(s)) to ensure compatibility.
For Cats:
No appointment is needed to meet cats. You can visit them during our regular business hours by checking in at the front office and then heading to the cat annex in the back of our shelter complex; all adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis.

3. Complete an Adoption Questionnaire
Fill out the appropriate form (dog or cat) once you decide which pet to adopt.
4. Adoption Counseling & Fees
Meet with your adoption specialist to finalize paperwork and process your payment.

5. Spay/Neuter Surgery & Bringing Your New Pet Home
If altered: You can take your new pet home immediately.
If not altered: Spay/neuter surgery will be scheduled and you can pick up your pet after the surgery has been completed.
All adopters go home with a “go bag” sponsored by Friends of Yolo County Animal Services, containing a new leash, collar, treats, toys, and a bag of kibble to help ease your new pet’s transition into their new home.
